Musculus anconeus

Anconeus

Anconeus is a small triangular muscle at the back of the elbow that assists the triceps in extension and, more importantly, stabilizes the elbow and the ulna during forearm rotation. Though often grouped with the triceps functionally, it sits at the proximal posterior forearm and is engaged in pressing lockouts and any loaded elbow extension. It is not trained in isolation but contributes to elbow joint integrity under heavy load.

Actions
Assists elbow extension, Stabilizes the elbow joint, Abducts the ulna during pronation
Origin
Lateral epicondyle of the humerus
Insertion
Lateral surface of the olecranon and posterior surface of the proximal ulna
Innervation
Radial nerve (nerve to the anconeus) (C7-C8)
Blood supply
Deep brachial artery (medial collateral branch), recurrent interosseous artery
Synergists Triceps Brachii
