Musculus spinalis

Spinalis

The spinalis is the smallest and most medial of the three erector spinae columns, running closest to the spinous processes. It assists spinal extension and, in its cervical and cranial portions, extension and rotation of the head and neck. It contributes to the deep extensor work that stabilizes the spine during heavy hinging and squatting.

Actions
Spinal extension, Lateral flexion of the head and neck (unilateral), Extension of the head and neck
Origin
Spinous processes of the upper lumbar and lower thoracic vertebrae (thoracis); nuchal ligament and spinous process of C7 (cervicis)
Insertion
Spinous processes of the upper thoracic vertebrae (thoracis); spinous process of the axis (cervicis); occipital bone via blending with semispinalis capitis (capitis)
Innervation
Posterior (dorsal) rami of the spinal nerves
Blood supply
Lateral sacral and posterior intercostal arteries
Heads
Spinalis thoracis, Spinalis cervicis, Spinalis capitis
Antagonists Rectus Abdominis
