Musculus gemellus superior

Superior Gemellus

The superior gemellus is a small paired muscle that reinforces the obturator internus tendon, contributing to the triceps coxae that externally rotates and stabilizes the hip. It abducts the flexed hip and helps center the femoral head during single-leg loading. It functions as part of the deep-rotator cuff of the hip and is trained through rotational stability work.

Actions
Hip external rotation (extended hip), Hip abduction (flexed hip), Hip joint stabilization
Origin
Ischial spine
Insertion
Medial surface of the greater trochanter via the obturator internus tendon (trochanteric fossa)
Innervation
Nerve to obturator internus (L5-S2)
Blood supply
Inferior gluteal and internal pudendal arteries
Antagonists Tensor Fasciae Latae
