Inferior Gemellus

Musculus gemellus inferior

Inferior Gemellus

The inferior gemellus is the lower paired companion to the superior gemellus, blending with the obturator internus tendon to form the triceps coxae that externally rotates and stabilizes the hip. It contributes to abduction of the flexed hip and to deep postural control of the femoral head. It is engaged in the same rotational and single-leg stability training as the other deep rotators.

Actions
Hip external rotation (extended hip), Hip abduction (flexed hip), Hip joint stabilization
Origin
Upper margin of the ischial tuberosity
Insertion
Medial surface of the greater trochanter via the obturator internus tendon (trochanteric fossa)
Innervation
Nerve to quadratus femoris (L4-S1)
Blood supply
Inferior gluteal and medial circumflex femoral arteries
Antagonists Tensor Fasciae Latae
