Subclavius
Musculus subclavius
The subclavius is a small muscle running beneath the clavicle that depresses and steadies the clavicle at the sternoclavicular joint during arm and shoulder movement. It cushions the underlying subclavian vessels and brachial plexus and can help protect them during clavicle fracture. Though not directly trainable in isolation, it contributes to shoulder-girdle stability under heavy pressing and overhead loads.
- Actions
- Depression of the clavicle and shoulder, Stabilization of the sternoclavicular joint, Anterior and inferior pull on the clavicle, Elevation of the 1st rib (accessory inspiration)
- Origin
- Junction of the 1st rib and its costal cartilage
- Insertion
- Subclavian groove on the inferior surface of the middle third of the clavicle
- Innervation
- Nerve to subclavius / subclavian nerve (C5-C6) from the upper trunk of the brachial plexus
- Blood supply
- Clavicular branch of the thoracoacromial trunk
