Rotatores

The rotatores are the deepest layer of the transversospinal muscles, small quadrilateral fascicles most developed in the thoracic region that span one to two vertebral segments. With a high density of proprioceptors, they function more as fine spinal-position sensors and segmental stabilizers than as powerful rotators. They contribute to the deep stiffness and positional control that protect the spine during loaded twisting and bracing.

Actions
Contralateral rotation of the vertebral column, Segmental spinal stabilization, Proprioception
Origin
Transverse process of a vertebra (superior and posterior part)
Insertion
Lamina and base of the spinous process of the vertebra one (breves) or two (longi) segments above
Innervation
Posterior (dorsal) rami of the spinal nerves
Blood supply
Posterior intercostal and lumbar arteries
Heads
Rotatores breves, Rotatores longi
