Rotatores
Musculi rotatores
The rotatores are the deepest layer of the transversospinal muscles, small quadrilateral fascicles most developed in the thoracic region that span one to two vertebral segments. With a high density of proprioceptors, they function more as fine spinal-position sensors and segmental stabilizers than as powerful rotators. They contribute to the deep stiffness and positional control that protect the spine during loaded twisting and bracing.
- Actions
- Contralateral rotation of the vertebral column, Segmental spinal stabilization, Proprioception
- Origin
- Transverse process of a vertebra (superior and posterior part)
- Insertion
- Lamina and base of the spinous process of the vertebra one (breves) or two (longi) segments above
- Innervation
- Posterior (dorsal) rami of the spinal nerves
- Blood supply
- Posterior intercostal and lumbar arteries
