Musculus flexor digitorum longus

Flexor Digitorum Longus

The flexor digitorum longus is a deep posterior compartment muscle that flexes the four lesser toes and assists ankle plantarflexion and inversion. It contributes to toe grip and balance during the stance and push-off phases of gait. Along with the other deep flexors it supports the foot’s arches and is relevant to barefoot and foot-strengthening training.

Actions
Flexion of the lateral four toes, Ankle plantarflexion, Foot inversion
Origin
Posterior surface of the tibia below the soleal line, medial to the tibialis posterior
Insertion
Plantar surfaces of the bases of the distal phalanges of the lateral four toes (2nd-5th)
Innervation
Tibial nerve (L5, S1, S2)
Blood supply
Posterior tibial artery
