The dumbbell shrug holds a dumbbell at each side, letting the shoulders travel through a slightly longer range than a barbell and keeping the load clear of the thighs. Stand tall with the arms hanging and the dumbbells alongside the hips, lift the shoulders straight up toward the ears, and squeeze the traps at the top. Lower slowly to a full stretch and keep the elbows straight so the work stays on the trapezius.
