The barbell shrug loads both traps at once with a bar held in front of the thighs, allowing the heaviest bilateral overload of any shrug variation. Take a shoulder-width overhand grip, stand tall with the chest up, and lift the shoulders straight toward the ears without bending the elbows. Squeeze hard at the top and lower slowly; use straps if grip gives out before the traps do.
