Fibularis Brevis
Musculus fibularis brevis
The fibularis brevis lies deep to the fibularis longus in the lateral compartment and is the strongest evertor (abductor) of the foot. It is a major dynamic stabilizer against inversion ankle sprains, and its tendon attachment at the fifth metatarsal base is a common avulsion fracture site. Strengthening it improves lateral ankle stability for cutting and uneven-terrain work.
- Actions
- Foot eversion, Ankle plantarflexion
- Origin
- Lower two-thirds of the lateral surface of the fibula, deep to the fibularis longus
- Insertion
- Tuberosity at the base of the fifth metatarsal (tendon passes behind the lateral malleolus)
- Innervation
- Superficial fibular (superficial peroneal) nerve (L5, S1)
- Blood supply
- Fibular (peroneal) and anterior tibial arteries
