Musculus fibularis brevis

Fibularis Brevis

The fibularis brevis lies deep to the fibularis longus in the lateral compartment and is the strongest evertor (abductor) of the foot. It is a major dynamic stabilizer against inversion ankle sprains, and its tendon attachment at the fifth metatarsal base is a common avulsion fracture site. Strengthening it improves lateral ankle stability for cutting and uneven-terrain work.

Actions
Foot eversion, Ankle plantarflexion
Origin
Lower two-thirds of the lateral surface of the fibula, deep to the fibularis longus
Insertion
Tuberosity at the base of the fifth metatarsal (tendon passes behind the lateral malleolus)
Innervation
Superficial fibular (superficial peroneal) nerve (L5, S1)
Blood supply
Fibular (peroneal) and anterior tibial arteries
