Tractus iliotibialis

Iliotibial Tract

The iliotibial tract is a thick longitudinal band of the fascia lata that receives the tendons of the gluteus maximus and tensor fasciae latae and runs down the lateral thigh to Gerdy’s tubercle. It transmits hip-muscle force to stabilize the knee in the frontal plane during running and single-leg stance. Repetitive friction at the lateral knee makes it a classic site of IT-band syndrome in runners and cyclists.
