Musculus platysma

Platysma

A broad, thin sheet of muscle in the superficial fascia of the anterior neck that tenses neck skin and depresses the lower lip and jaw. A muscle of facial expression rather than a strength-training target, it is included for regional completeness and is relevant cosmetically (neck banding) rather than for load-bearing performance.

Actions
Depression of the mandible and lower lip, Tensing the skin of the neck, Drawing down the corners of the mouth (grimace)
Origin
Fascia overlying the upper pectoralis major and deltoid (subcutaneous tissue over the clavicle and upper chest).
Insertion
Base of the mandible, skin of the lower face, and modiolus/corner of the mouth.
Innervation
Cervical branch of the facial nerve (CN VII).
Blood supply
Submental branch of the facial artery and suprascapular branch of the thyrocervical trunk.
