The leg press drives a loaded sled away from the body with the back supported, training the quadriceps and glutes through a guided knee-and-hip extension without loading the spine. Because the hip extends along with the knee, it favors the vastus muscles over the rectus femoris. Keep the lower back flat on the pad, lower until the knees reach about 90 degrees, and avoid locking out hard at the top.
